Memorials are part of our built fabric. Over 700 have been recorded. Most are war memorials, 500 relating to the first World War and others for the South African and New Zealand wars.

There are memorials for discoveries and successes.
Others are for events which impinged directly on the lives of New Zealanders, disasters arising from the nature of our country its treacherous seas, volcanoes, and seismic nature. Then there are major fires and aircraft crashes.

Some of these events have caused large loss of life and communities have wanted to remember them and have done so in a variety of ways.
