Tarawera Eruption

The eruption of Mount Tarawera in June 1886 was the deadliest volcanic eruption in New Zealand since the arrival of Europeans. There were over 150 fatalities and the towns of Moura, Te Koutu, Kokotaia, Piripai, Pukekiore, Otuapane, Te Tapahoro, Te Wairoa, Totarariki, and Waingongogo were almost entirely buried. In Rotomahana and Te Wairoa people were saved by the stronger buildings.
