Ralph Hotere (1931-2013) was Maori, of Te Aupouri iwi. His paintings are about being Maori and living in modern Aotearoa New Zealand. American and European movements in art, such as Op art, and minimalist abstraction, also visibly influence his paintings. Hotere’s art has been an important ‘voice’ for the political issues that New Zealand, and more particularly Maori has faced over second half of the twentieth Century. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Otago in 2003.
