Pottery and Ceramics

With the demise of Crown Lynn New Zealand no longer has an industrial scale pottery industry. Its products have now become 'collectables'. However in the sixties and seventies individuals developed a vigorous interest in pottery reflecting lifestyle choices by people influenced by the environmental movement thinking of the time; epitomised by the move to communes and the Whole Earth Catalogue. A number of professional studio potters became established including Len Castle, Doreen Blumhardt , Yvonne Rust, Mirek Smisek and Barry Brickell. Interest in pottery as a craft and art form continues with the annual Portage Ceramic Awards, New Zealand's premier ceramics event being administered by the Te Uru Waitakere Contemporary Gallery .
