The scenic road trip around East Cape between Gisborne and Opotiki is 330 km long. Unless you are in a hurry it will pay to stop off, as there is a lot to be seen on the way. The route is known as the Pacific Coast Highway. En-route there are many Maori settlements and associated Marae with carved meeting houses. The eastern side of the Cape is the tribal home of the Ngati Porou iwi, while the Whanau-a-Apanui people are in the west. If you planning to travel the East Cape Whakatane could be a good place to stay at the start or finish as Opotiki has limited accommodation.
