Brian Brake followed an interest in photography in his school years at Christchurch Boys High School by becoming a portrait photographer and then joining the National Film Unit. In 1954 he travelled to London and in 1957 became a member of Magnum. He scored a coup in 1960 when his photo essay "Monsoon" was published by three picture magazines including "Life".
