Art Deco

Art deco is a decorative style originating in Paris in the 1920s. It followed on from Art Nouveau, but is simpler in shape and motif, with an emphasis on strong elegance and functionalism. Art Deco style incorporates references to modernist ideas and the art movements of the time such as futurism and cubism. The city of Napier in New Zealand is renown internationally for its many fine examples of Art Deco architecture, e.g. the Rothman’s building. There are other exemplary examples throughout the country.
