Archaeology has played an important role in establishing New Zealand's prehistory. (i.e before the arrival of Europeans). Radiocarbon dates obtained from archaeological sites have been used to estimate the timing of Polynesian arrival in New Zealand as 1250–1300 AD and artifacts found at theses sites have contributed to an understanding of the evolution of Maori Culture. Also the extinction of the Moa by the Polynesian arrivals has been traced by analysis of remains found at Moa hunter sites.
